EMT Academy
Virginia Beach EMS holds regular emergency medical technician (EMT) academies to train future volunteers to serve the Virginia Beach community and support the volunteer rescue system.
The Virginia Beach EMS EMT Academy provides students without prior medical experience the education, resources and hands on training to build a solid foundation as an entry-level patient care provider.
The VBEMS curriculum aligns with the National EMS Education Standards (NEMSES) for Virginia EMT certification and prepares students for success with both Virginia OEMS and the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT).
Tuition and VBEMS Membership Contract
Tuition for the EMT Academy is $2,195, which covers learning materials, academy exams and uniforms.Â
Active VBEMS volunteer members will enter an educational contract that offsets tuition costs. To fulfill the contract, the student must:
- Complete the EMT Academy.
- Pass the NREMT exam (earning dual EMT certification).
- Complete the VBEMS Basic Life Support (BLS) Intern process and achieve EMT release status.
- Volunteer actively with VB Rescue for one year after internship.Â
Once these requirements are met, the education contract is considered complete.

Note: Enrollment in BLS (EMT) Academies ends two (2) weeks prior to the start date of the course, with any exceptions noted above. Enrollment is only offered to approved applicants who have met all application and prerequisite requirements.
